More than twelve percent of students at German universities come from abroad, just like you! You pay very low tuition fees and sometimes none at all, it’s no wonder Germany is high on most students’ bucket lists.
And with more and more courses and degree programs are being offered in English, especially at the master’s degree level. Post graduate students now more than ever will be heading to this diverse country located in the heart of Europe! But for master students especially in taught course program, getting and living there is no picnic.
Applying for the German student visa is a process that can take a lot of time and hassle. My own journey to obtain a German student visa was nothing short of a nightmare.
Here are my tips on getting a Student Visa for German Universities in Malaysia & Brunei!
Obtain Your Visa Well in Advance
No, visas appointment can’t be obtained on the spot. The process for getting a student visa in Malaysia is to book an online appointment (you may get an appointment one month later), take your passport to the appointment, then leave your passport and wait about 4 – 6 weeks for them to process your visa.
In the meantime, you can’t really do any other international travel because your passport is not with you. There is only 1 German Embassy in Malaysia located in Kuala Lumpur.
Emphasis on ‘Well in Advance’
The process can take weeks or even months. German Embassy in Kuala Lumpur get swamped with applications especially during the beginning of Winter Semester, usually October intake.
You will need at least 1 – 2 months in advance to apply which let’s be honest, few of us have when planning a big trip!
Hence, I’m going to give you the procedure timeline so you can imagine the whole process and be well prepared. Always bear in mind that you need 1 month after booking the Online Visa Appointment in German Embassy Kuala Lumpur and you need another 4 – 6 weeks for the visa approval.
Let’s have a look and get the idea!
So, learn from my mistake. You can start to book Online Appointment in July and get the appointment in August. By following this timeline, you are able to get the student visa by end of September and can fly to Germany by 1st October!
Submit All Your Documents
There is a long list of items you need to submit to obtain the visa directly from the German Embassy, so be sure to do your research and see which documents you need. Click here to book the Online Visa Appointment, and click here to download the student visa application form.
Again – send in the COMPLETE documents. So you will need at least 4 – 6 weeks to ensure you get everything processed and back to you in time!
…but it’s not over!
Your student visa applied at your home country only valid for 6 months. Once you arrive in Germany, you must apply for Residency Permit at Immigration Office. Only then you can extend your student visa following your course duration, say 2 years.
But good news! Once you arrive in Germany, you’ll see how much it was worth it! You can make friends from around the world and receive student price for many things. All you have to do is present your student ID.
