It’s funny how many of us never truly explore our own ‘backyards’. I grew up in Kuala Lumpur and up until just a few months ago, had never try the FlowRider or many of the most indoor games in Kuala Lumpur.
As someone who love to travel around the world, it’s so important to remind myself that I can experience life to the fullest without having to spend a lot of money or travel far away.
I live less than 30 minutes away from One Utama and yet I’ve never considered going flowriding myself. Yes, I’m terrified of strong waves, but that little voice in the back of my head saying, “I’ll try it ‘one day’,” always seemed to outweigh any commitment to go. But one day I woke up and convinced myself to go!
Check out my flowriding experience at FlowRider 1 Utama
Offering the first indoor flowriding and surfing simulator in Malaysia, FlowRider 1 Utama is located in the new 1 Utama E area.
FlowRider 1 Utama features Double FlowRider that was designed in US with flawless waves simulator created by endless sheets of water flowing at 32km per hour.
This is the place to go for flowriding, bodyboarding and surfing activities.
The surface is made of a soft and bouncy material so you won’t hurt yourself if you fall, which definitely a highlight for me!
Tips – wading pools nearby is included creating a beach-themed event area. This is the place for your kids to go while looking you flowriding or soak yourself while waiting for your turn.
Who Can Ride FlowRider
This is one of the most frequent questions. Flowrider is for almost anyone in good physical condition, whether you are a beginner or expert.
However, children aged 3 or below are not allowed. You must be over 107cm to bodyboard and over 122cm to perform a standup ride on the FlowRider.
The truth is that it is a strenuous activity. Yes, you must be comfortable in turbulent moving water. My advice – if you have any injury, this activity is not recommended for you.

With a world class facility, it’s consider one of the cheapest FlowRider (that’s right you heard me) in Southeast Asia if not in the world.
An adult FlowRider ticket price costs RM45 on weekdays or RM55 on weekends for the locals. While RM55 on weekdays or RM65 on weekends for the foreigners.

You can rent towels for RM5 per session at the counter. Do note that RM15 deposit is required for every towel rental and will be refunded when the towel is return.
There’s two main activities to do at FlowRider 1 Utama – bodyboard and standup flowride. How do you decide what to do at FlowRider 1 Utama?
Since it was my first flowriding experience, so my first choice was bodyboarding. I spent nearly 30 minutes on bodyboarding and another 30 minutes on standup flowriding.
You will find it is easier to learn. For me, bodyboarding is good as a warm up session before the standup flowriding.
You have to place the board in the water and lie down with your stomach on the board. How to move forward and backward? By pressing down on the front board to go forward and pressing down with both elbows to go back.
How about to move from side to side? By pressing your right elbow to go the right side and your left elbow to go to the left side. You’re welcome 🙂
Truth be told, the standup flowboard can be daunting – especially if it’s your first time. After trying the bodyboard, I’ve tried to stand up on the flowboard.
The instructor steps on the board at the front of the wave while I hold onto a rope with my left hand, slowly lowers myself into the water. We tried to hold steady but I swept by the waves the moment I let go the rope.
I feel discouraged after few times falling. But falling is a part of the game. My second instructor actually really great at making me feel less nervous and I started to feel excited about the whole experience.
The instructor patiently demonstrating how to balance while standing on the board for two rounds. By the third round, I feel more stable and able to carve side by side by pressing on my toes to go forward and my heels to go back.
I’ve put together my first experience to help make it easy for you 😀
In My Opinion
I’d say with a world class facilities and affordable price, it’s worth the time and money. It could be one of the coolest things you can do in Kuala Lumpur.
It was my first flowriding experience, and it was memorable. Whether you are a flowriding newbie or surf pro, I’d highly recommend checking out FlowRider 1 Utama and have your own flowriding experience!
One drawback though, you’ll wake up on the next day with muscle soreness especially if it is your first time.
How’s your first flowriding experience? Tell me in the comments.
